I’ve got a theory: the player in Last Nightfall got punished for doing something (perhaps to the people in the town?) and was sent to the abyss. It could also be that something happened to their loved ones and the guilt consumed them or smth. Anyway, the abyss saw a last glimmer of hope and goodness within the person. So, whether to crush their spirits or to give them one last chance for redemption, the abyss sent the player to the world of Last Nightfall, and gave them a chance to be free of
